New Adventure for Marlys' Garden

FARMER'S MARKET

I've been helping my daughter, Annie / Ruthann Van Vark @ the Pella Farmer's Market on Thursday afternoons this summer.  Annie decided to go to FM to sell her brown eggs. And well, one thing led to another.

We have been bringing planting dishes nicknamed "bucket bowls" to FM. These are unique planters made from a product called papercrete. It's like hypertufa but made from shredder paper, perlite, & Portland concrete. We have donated all of the money from our papercrete products to Building A Dream in the Country. A fund to build an all handicapped accessible home for our friends the Spece family near Independence, IA. We will be designing these bowls for winter bouquets soon. Learn more about papercrete @ http://marlysgarden.blogspot.com/ previous posts.

We brought some beautiful fall décor & gourd fall center pieces to market this week. We had fun doing them and my grand daughter, Marlee helped. She is quite the worker and quite the designer.

Last Pella Farmer's Market is October 24, 2013

2013 Garden Gala Speakers

Leanna Culver:  Polk County Master Gardener & Volunteer Curator of Coleus @ the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.

Leanna is crazy about coleus.  For the past five years she has donated countless hours tending the coleus collection @ the GDMBG.  She is extremely proud of what is thought to be the “largest coleus display garden” around and she loves teaching & talking all about coleus.  Two of her favorite coleus are ‘Alabama Sunset’ & ‘Mississippi Summer’

Daniel Barbec: Owner & Operator of Coe’s Floral & Gifts in Ames, IA will delight us with his floral designs and entertain us during the creative processes.  Dan always puts on a fabulous fun demonstration & performance. We’ll find out what’s hot and what’s not for our spring garden & home décor.

Rita Minard: Clematis Enthusiast & Avid Clematis Collector of over 90 clematis cultivars & over different 100 plants
Mission Statement:  “Simplify, demystify growing and caring for clematis.”
Rita says clematis is so elegant & surprisingly easy to grow.  She tells us we can see clematis in bloom from early spring to late fall in our gardens.  She will give us tips on how to grow, care for, & display these diverse magnificent plants.

My Aunt Barb brought me an old 1950 type bicycle serveral years ago.  I finally got at it, and got it planted just a couple weekends ago after finding back baskets at a garage sale last summer.  Then found an old freezer basket that was my grandma's for a front basket.  I'm lovin' those orange impatiens.  It's just for fun!!

AHS National Hosta Convention Artistic Design Award

Russ O'Harra Hosta Society sponsors the Artistic Design Award @ the AHS national convention annually.  In the past we have given a beautiful lead-cut glass vase.  It was time for a change.  Potter Bob Andersen of Sunflower Pottery, Pella, IA designed and created a "Hosta" vase for us.  http://sunflowerpottery.com/
